Add a Pinch of SALT Yoga to Your Schedule

Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) free yoga sessions will run at Wanangkura Stadium every Thursday, 10am to 12pm from 30 July to 24 September.

The initiative, made possible by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and supported by Port Hedland Leisure, gives residents 60 and older the opportunity to discover the freedom of yoga in a friendly and supportive environment.

In February, the Town was granted $34,000 from the Department to support a seniors wellbeing program for older Hedland residents to improve health, quality of life and fitness.  Each yoga session will be followed by morning tea and a brief information session on a different topic each week. This provides attendees with the opportunity get to know other residents within the Port Hedland community.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP encouraged older residents to take the opportunity to learn how yoga can benefit health and vitality.

“I’d like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for making the Town’s Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) yoga sessions possible, enabling the Town to engage with older residents with the support of Port Hedland Leisure.

“The weekly yoga sessions are free and up to 20 people can attend each session at the stadium, guided by a friendly instructor who will take the time to understand your fitness needs.

“Yoga is a great way to re-engage with exercise if you haven’t been active in a number of years, with low impact movements easy on the joints and good for the mind.

“Some of the benefits of yoga may include increased flexibility, better balance, increased strength and endurance, more body awareness, higher brain activity and potentially decreased pain.”
