The Town’s Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) program will return this October to December, offering seniors 60 and over a free 10 week yoga program to enjoy.
Proudly presented by the Town, supported by Port Hedland Leisure and sponsored by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Healthway, the program is designed to engage seniors with social physical activity.
Benefits of yoga for seniors may include increased flexibility, better balance, increased strength and endurance, more body awareness, higher brain activity and potentially decreased pain.
The sessions will run every Thursday from 10am to 12pm, featuring a 45 minute yoga session followed by a morning tea and brief information session conducted by a community organisation. Information sessions will be topical to issues faced by seniors, such as fall prevention and mental health.
Bookings are essential as there is a maximum of 20 people per session, and free accessible bus transport is available to and from the sessions.
Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP reflected on the success of the sessions which were held from July to September.
“I’d like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for making the Town’s Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) yoga sessions possible for another series, enabling the Town to engage with older residents with the support of Port Hedland Leisure.
“Yoga is a great way to re-engage with exercise if you haven’t been active in a number of years, with low impact movements easy on the joints and good for the mind.
“I had the opportunity to attend a session during the first series, and it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of attendees and the well-rounded benefits they gained, from physical rejuvenation to social interaction.”
