Community's Hard Work Means Popular Events Are Back on the Calendar

In line with WA’s easing COVID-19 restrictions, the Town of Port Hedland is relaunching the popular Sunset Food Markets and Twilight Movies Series, providing family friendly entertainment for local residents and tourists.

The first Twilight Movie will be held on Saturday 5 September at the Civic Centre Gardens. The first Sunset Food Market will be held on Friday 11 September from 5pm to 9pm at Marapikurrinya Park.

These popular events had to be cancelled in March due to the escalating COVID-19 crisis impacting communities across the country. As well as providing family friendly space to socialise, these events give local businesses the opportunity to trade and community groups the opportunity to fundraise.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the relaunch of the events, commending local residents for their hard work in keeping COVID-19 under control.

“I’d like to thank the local community for following public health advice in recent months, contributing to low numbers of COVID-19 transmission in regional WA. Because of these tremendous efforts, the Town is able to bring back popular events for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.

“The Twilight Movies and Sunset Food Markets proved to be a hit in the past, with local enthusiasm growing the events and positioning Hedland as a family friendly destination. I’m so pleased we can now bring back these events.

“The Twilight Movies series screens family friendly movies in the Civic Centre Gardens, with the picturesque Pilbara sunset backdrop. The Sunset Food Markets brings together the best of Hedland’s food vendors, boosting local economic activity and tempting the tastebuds of attendees.

“As we’ve seen with the recent See You At…Neighbourhood Events series, the community has shown a willingness to come together whilst still observing COVID-safe practices.

“We’ve also got an exciting new event coming in October: never before seen in Hedland and sure to impress!

“Even though WA’s COVID-19 curve has flattened, I urge everyone to continue taking the public health advice seriously by social distancing, hand sanitising and staying home if unwell.”

These events are family friendly and accessible. Please visit www.porthedland.wa.gov.au for more information; details about the events will be released closer to the date.
