Council has noted the Town's Youth Summer Strategy, which will provide expanded youth programming across Hedland throughout December 2021 and January 2022 in collaboration with the Hedland Youth Stakeholder Action Group (HYSAG).

The Town has worked closely with HYSAG on a calendar of events that will activate the South Hedland Aquatic Centre (SHAC) and the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub (JDHYCH) over the school holidays Programs on offer will include a WA Cricket Clinic, Splash at SHAC, Mini SLAM Basketball, arts and culture tailored programs in the youth lounge and kids club.

The Strategy includes providing free access to everyone under 16 to SHAC from Saturday 18 December 2021 until Sunday 30 January 2022 (inclusive). Council has also amended the budget to include $184,140 for the Christmas School holiday night patrols.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed Council's endorsement of the Town's Summer Youth Strategy.

"The Town's Summer Youth Strategy is about providing fun, engaging programming for Hedland's young people to enjoy throughout the December and January school holiday period.

"Council recognises that a large proportion of our community stays in town over the school holidays; therefore, we must provide programming during this time.

"We've worked with the HYSAG to offer programming which is both entertaining and reduces the potential for antisocial behaviour to occur.

"I'd like to thank Royal Life Saving WA, WA Police, the West Coast Eagles Youth Engagement Coordinator, FMG, Department of Justice, Headspace, Youth Involvement Council and Foodbank for supporting our efforts and making this programming possible.
"We're estimating a 60% increase in patronage over the school holiday period, so we're going to have a strengthened security presence across the SHAC and the JDHYCH to give patrons and the community peace of mind."

Please follow the Town of Port Hedland's Facebook page and website for programming updates.
