Earlier Season Closure for Gratwick Aquatic Centre

Published on Friday, 21 January 2022 at 9:25:36 AM

Gratwick Aquatic Centre will close early for the season due to ongoing challenges with safely staffing the facility – South Hedland Aquatic Centre and Gratwick Fitness Centre will continue normal operations.

The pool cannot operate safely without the provision of staff for critical positions, such as lifeguards and duty managers. The last day of operation for the summer season is 31 January 2022.

The Hedland Amateur Swimming Club will continue using the pool two afternoons per week, from 4.30-6.30pm, to honour pre-existing lane booking arrangements.

Mayor Peter Carter said closing the pool earlier than planned was necessary due to the current staffing climate.

"Due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, aquatic facilities right across WA are facing challenges when it comes to securing safe staffing levels."

"The safety of the community is our highest priority; therefore, we've made the decision to close Gratwick Aquatic Centre Pool earlier in the season than planned due to a shortage of critical aquatics staff."

"I understand it’s disappointing for regular patrons of the facility, however, South Hedland Aquatic Centre will continue to operate, and we will continue to work on the recruitment of aquatic staff moving forward."
