Low Sensory Hours at Wanangkura Stadium Set to Expand Accessibility

The Town will be implementing low sensory hours within the Wanangkura Stadium facility for an eight week trial period, starting today and running until Tuesday 22 December 2020.

The low sensory hours will run between 10am and 11am each day, creating a low distraction, inclusive environment in the facility’s gym, lobby and crèche.

The initiative aims to minimise visual and auditory stimulation to create a more accessible environment, particularly for anyone who experiences sensitivity to light and sound.

During the hour, sound, music and lights will be significantly lowered in the gym, lobby and crèche. All members of the community are able to access the facility during this time.

Creating low sensory spaces enables more families to feel comfortable at the Stadium, delivering on the Town’s commitment to improve facility accessibility across Hedland.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the initiative, pointing to the success of similar programs run in Hedland.

“Low sensory hours at Wanangkura Stadium give families the peace of mind that a daily time is accessible to experience low sensory stimulation in the gym, lobby and crèche.

“The Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema has run low sensory screening sessions, expanding the accessibility of the movie going experience for more families.

“Our Disability, Access and Inclusion Plan 2017-2022 seeks to evolve Town facilities into spaces which are accessible to all, mindful of the community’s diverse needs.

“Sensory processing is top of mind for many local families, who face the daily task of seeking out public environments that are sensitive to their needs.

“There is also evidence to suggest that everyone can benefit from spaces with low sensory stimulation, helping us all have better peace of mind.

“If you or your family have found the Stadium over stimulating in the past, I would encourage you to come along to the hours during the trial period and assess the improvement.

“If the trial period is successful, we would look into implementing the initiative on a permanent basis.”
