Twelve months have passed since Port Hedland Leisure transitioned from a contracted service to in-house management, with the service recording growth across a number of key indicators.

Port Hedland Leisure is the Town managed brand which has responsibility for running Wanangkura Stadium, Gratwick Aquatic Centre (GAC), South Hedland Aquatic Centre (SHAC) and other physical and sporting ventures across Hedland.

Since bringing the facilities back to in-house management, membership numbers have increased by 35% and swim school enrolments have increased by 91%.

Total entry to the stadium in twelve months surpassed 200,000, entry to SHAC topped 130,000 and entries to GAC hit 12,000.

1,300 group fitness classes were held, with over 15,500 participants recorded at all group fitness classes. All bookings at the stadium totalled 1,241, and the number of teams who participated in social sports topped 200. There were 11,768 visits to crèche in the same period.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the statistical increases were testament to the hard work of Port Hedland Leisure staff.

“I’d like to congratulate Port Hedland Leisure for twelve months of in-house management. The team have lived their mantra of Fitness for All, providing a friendly face where local residents of all backgrounds can focus on their health and wellbeing in a welcoming atmosphere.

“There has been a significant increase of 35% in membership numbers and a 91% increase in swim school enrolment, which is particularly crucial in securing the swim safety of our young ones.

“Behind the numbers are the team members who have made it all happen. Without their passion and dedication, we would not have seen these positive numbers.

“The fitness facilities have seen their share of challenges, however I’m confident that once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, there will be a resurged interest in fitness participation in the community and Port Hedland Leisure will continue to grow from strength to strength.”
