Council has accepted the tender submitted by MJW Building to construct the South Hedland Skate Park shade structure.
The Skate Park is one of Australia's most advanced public skating facilities, hosting year-round youth programming and serving as a congregation point for young people.
In the hot Pilbara weather, the shade will increase the utilisation of this much-loved community space and ensure our youth's safety.
Mayor Peter Carter said it is one of the Town's most essential and loved youth oriented facilities.
"The South Hedland Skate Park was opened by the Town in 2015 with support from the WA Government, BHP and FMG. This is a wonderful example of Local Government and industry working together for the benefit of the community.
"I'm pleased to be delivering the long awaited shade structures over the Skate Park, a key pillar in our commitment to revitalising existing public infrastructure.
"Since 2015, the South Hedland Skate Park has hosted hundreds of youth programs, including South Side Sk8, Youth Week Activities, engagement by WA Police and other recreational activities targeting young people.
"As part of the Live it, Tell it campaign, the community specifically identified a need to revitalise community infrastructure and facilities. The need for shelter at the Park was identified through this process to protect skaters and parents from the hot Pilbara sun.
"Ephemeral LED lighting panels will liven the underside of the shelter with exciting and colourful displays and will be fully programmable by artists and the Town's Communications team. This will create new program opportunities with local youth and artists.
Construction is expected to kick off at the end of April and be completed by September. The Town will seek to minimise disruptions and road closures throughout construction and will keep residents informed at all times.
Community members are asked to please be mindful of workers in the vicinity for the construction duration, obey signage and do not enter construction zones.
