Town Reflects on the Importance of Reconciliation Week

Reconciliation Week, held from 27 May to 3 June, celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘In This Together’.

The Town would like to acknowledge the Kariyarra, Ngarla and Nyamal people as the Traditional Custodians of the Port Hedland lands. We recognise their strength and resilience and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Reconciliation WA is bringing the state together in digital spaces in lieu of physical gatherings, and will have daily content available on its website, including engaging lunch and learns, videos and other resources.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said it was important for residents to reflect on the importance of Reconciliation Week.

“To achieve reconciliation we have to respect, reflect and acknowledge the unique contribution made by our First Australians and have clear, open and sometimes courageous conversations about real shared history.

“This year’s theme, ‘In This Together’, reminds us that reconciliation needs to be a collective action, which we all understand and work towards as one.

“I’d like to thank Water Corporation for planning to light up the South Hedland water tower in the colours of the Aboriginal Flag, serving as a focal point of reflection throughout the week.”
