Local community groups, businesses and community members are invited to comment on the Town’s draft Public Art Strategy: a framework to achieve a sense of identity and belonging through public art.

Earlier this year, the Town embarked on a period of engagement to inform the development of the Strategy. Workshops were held with the community and key stakeholders, specific Aboriginal engagement was undertaken and social media polls elicited over 1,000 responses online.

The Strategy provides a vision for a future public art program which is cohesive, engaging, innovative and authentic to Hedland. Importantly, it emphasises the talents and contributions of local creatives, fostering pride and community spirit.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the release of the draft Strategy for comment, pointing to its role in fostering future tourism and economic development.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the development of the draft Public Art Strategy last year through workshops, surveys and polls. We’ve used these invaluable insights to develop a draft Strategy grounded in key actions which stakeholders can work towards.

“Community consultation has uncovered a common desire to procure public art which was cost effective, uplifted local creatives and sought innovative applications.

“Public art is a highly visible indicator of a community’s creativity, expressing the vision of local creatives and telling unique place based stories. Public art educates people, promotes cultures and traditions and builds connections.

“The draft Strategy covers the collection, conservation and care, procurement, management, access, development and funding of public art in Hedland.

“I look forward to Council considering the adoption of the final Strategy later this year.”
