The Cemetery Beach Playground and Shay Gap Memorial Park Playground have both been nominated in the WA 2020 Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) Awards of Excellence, recognising high standards of public space activation across Australia.
Cemetery Beach Playground is nominated in the under $500,000 investment category, and Shay Gap Memorial Park Playground is nominated in the over $500,000 investment category. Both spaces were renewed as part of the Town’s 2019/20 $1.2 million playground replacement program.
The Town partnered with contractors Active Discovery and Yurra Pty Ltd to complete the renewals, based on community feedback from the Town’s Strategic Community Plan and Playground Satisfaction Survey.
Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP congratulated the Town’s staff for the playgrounds being nominated in the 2020 PLA Awards of Excellence.
“It’s fantastic to see both the Cemetery Beach Playground and Shay Gap Memorial Playground nominated in the 2020 Parks and Leisure Australia Awards of Excellence. Both projects are a testament to the hard work of Town staff, contractors Active Discovery and Yurra Pty Ltd and community feedback.
“Both playgrounds are grounded in the principles of accessibility, inclusion and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Shay Gap Park features LED lighting and more open space to shine a light on any potential incidents of anti-social behaviour.
“Cemetery Beach Playground was fast tracked following the coastal damage incurred by Cyclone Veronica, with the community named Turtie McTurtle Face sculpture keeping watch of our young ones while they enjoy the state of the art equipment.
“As the National peak body for the people behind the places, I’d like to thank Parks and Leisure Australia for holding these awards and recognising the essential role playgrounds play in forging active, liveable communities for families.
“We have some stiff competition; however, I’m hopeful these Hedland playgrounds can take out the top award honours later this year.”
