Works to begin on South Hedland skate park shade structure

Construction works for the South Hedland skate park shade structure (the structure) will commence on Tuesday 20 April, following the completion of the school holidays.

Stages one, two, three and four will be undertaken concurrently, with a projected completion date of October 2021. The entire park will be closed for the duration of the works.

In 2019, Council endorsed the structure’s conceptual design by Enlocus Landscape Architects. In February 2021, Council accepted the tender submitted by MJW Building to construct the structure.

Key benefits of the structure include providing 80% shade coverage over the park, embedding LED lighting for night-time activity, increasing utilisation of the park among local youth, acting as a focal point of civic pride and contributing to South Hedland’s liveability.

The park opened in 2015 and is one of Australia’s largest and most advanced skate parks, hosting hundreds of youth diversionary programs and serving as a key recreational facility in the heart of South Hedland.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the commencement of the works in April.

“Council and I are excited to see works for the South Hedland skate park shade structure commence on Tuesday 20 April, delivering on long held community desire for better sun protection at the facility.

“Since 2015, the South Hedland skate park has hosted crucial youth diversionary programming which has made a difference in the lives of young people. The structure will enhance the facility with 80% shade coverage, vital protection from the Pilbara sun.

“I ask all residents to please abide by signage in the area while works are ongoing, do not enter construction zones and drive carefully around the park.”
