Council has adopted the Town’s Rating Strategy and Annual Budget for the 2021/22 financial year, focussed on operational efficiency, asset management and sustaining current service levels to the community.

The Town’s Elected Members have approved a 2% increase in rates, accounting for approximately 72% of the operating revenue in the 2021/22 budget. The Budget prioritises investing in Hedland’s core infrastructure assets to support a growing population.

Key capital work allocations include $11 million for the Port Hedland Seawalls, $6 million for the Port Hedland Community Centre, $4 million for the Plant Replacement Program, $3 million for South Hedland landfill upgrades and $2.4 million for the Footpath Renewal Program.

Further allocations include $2.25 million for the Drainage Renewal Program, $2 million for the ongoing design of the Hedland Recreation Hubs, $1 million for Finucane Island Boat Ramp Upgrades, $820,000 for the replacement of the Pretty Pool Park playground, $623,000 for the roads blackspot project and $500,000 for the refurbishment of Lotteries House.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed Council’s endorsement of the Budget.

“The Town’s 2021/22 Annual Budget focusses on delivering a record public infrastructure program to improve Hedland’s built environment for the future.

“We’re continuing to build on the work delivered in recent years, such allocating funds for the construction of the Port Hedland Community Centre on McGregor Street, the construction of the Port Hedland Seawalls to secure our vulnerable coastline and upgrading the South Hedland Landfill.

“Council and I believe this budget targets funds to where they’re required, working to achieve the outcomes of the Town’s Strategic Community Plan 2018-2028 for the benefit of the community.”
