Gratwick Aquatic Centre Reopening This Weekend

The Town of Port Hedland is inviting community members to celebrate the official re-opening of the Gratwick Aquatic Centre (GAC) with free entry on offer to community members this weekend.

The valued community asset was closed in April 2018 for scheduled upgrade works; however, a catastrophic filtration system failure occurred in September 2018 during the system’s testing.

Two failed pressure filters needed to be replaced to comply with the WA Department of Health standards.

In addition to new filtration, the facility has undergone upgrades to its ablutions, tiling, pool infrastructure and signage.

“I’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during GAC’s upgrade,” said Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling.

“GAC’s longer than expected closure time has meant we have been able to rectify all the issues comprehensively.

“I congratulate the Town officers and contractors who worked to overcome significant challenges to deliver this fabulous result and provide a much-needed cooling off space during the Pilbara summer for Port Hedland’s residents.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the community and local sporting groups enjoy the facility.”

Entry to GAC will be free this weekend, 23-24 November. Opening hours can be found here.
