Hedland’s sporting heroes were recognised at this evening's 2019 Town of Port Hedland and BHP Community Sports Awards, celebrating local talent, ambition and sportsmanship.

These awards were made possible by BHP, Itochu Minerals & Energy of Australia Pty Ltd, Pilbara Ports Authority, Norwest Crane Hire and Rio Tinto Dampier Salt Limited.

Former Australian Test and One Day International cricketer, star BBL player and motivational speaker, Brad Hogg, was this evening’s special guest.

The Awards delivered on the Town’s commitment to foster an inclusive and involved community, with well utilised and valued facilities.

An independent panel of judges assessed nominees from a range of codes, some of whom have been involved in local clubs for over a decade.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling congratulated the nominees and award recipients for contributing to Hedland’s sporting culture and community spirit.

“It was an honour to be involved with the Awards, and I had the chance to meet with the nominees and express my thanks.

“It was particularly special to have Brad Hogg at the Awards, renowned for his contributions to Australian cricket and motivational speaking across the country.

“Here in Hedland, we are lucky to be home to so many wonderful sporting clubs and organisations, all made possible by the hard work of volunteers.

“Dean Marlow was awarded Sportsman of the Year, and Relma Bule-Turner was awarded Sportswoman of the Year: these people demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship, athleticism and talent in 2019.

“Amity Stewart was awarded Best Junior Athlete Female and Nathan Joubert was awarded Best Junior Athlete Male: these awards recognise the exceptional sporting talent shown by our young people.

“Hedland Water Polo Association was awarded Club of the Year, in recognition of the positive impact they’ve had in the wider community.

“James Brown was awarded Coach of the Year, and Menushi Perera was awarded Official of the Year: these individuals demonstrated leadership and vision which inspired fellow club members and the community.

“Shelley Glasson and Kristina Quince were both awarded Volunteer of the Year, going above and beyond the call of duty by giving countless hours to their respective sporting organisations.

“I’d like to once again congratulate all the award recipients for their contributions to Hedland’s sporting culture, showing leadership in the community and inspiring others.”
