Temporary Off-leash Dog Park Endorsed for Marie Marland Reserve

Council have endorsed a corner of Marie Marland Reserve to be designated by fencing and signage for off-leash dog exercise, delivering on community feedback.

The area will be approximately 25 metres by 70 metres, featuring gated entry and tree shade for dogs and their owners. Due to the temporary nature of this area, no additional fixture or fittings will be established.

Water for owners and dogs will be in the vicinity of the park.

A permanent off-leash dog exercise area with more amenities will be established as part of the long-term South Hedland Integrated Sports Complex (SHISC) masterplan.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the establishment of this temporary facility reflected the overwhelming will of South Hedland dog owners.

“For years, the only two off-leash dog exercise areas have been at the McGregor Street Canine Club and the Spoilbank, both in Port Hedland. Now, South Hedland dog owners will have somewhere close by for their canine friends to run free.

“Our recent survey on the subject of off-leash dog park areas found that 96% of respondents held a favourable view of Council taking a pro-active approach to providing an off-leash dog exercise area in South Hedland.

“Admittedly, the temporary area will not have all the bells and whistles of a more permanent facility. However, the interim area at the Marie Marland Reserve will mean dog owners don’t have to wait until SHISC is constructed.

“We intend to commence construction works in March, so keep an eye out on the Town’s channels for the official opening date.”
