The Town of Port Hedland has received $30,000 as part of the State Government’s WA Bicycle Network grant funding program for the design of a shared footpath on Wilson Street.

This will link Port Hedland with Redbank Bridge, enabling Port Hedland and South Hedland to be connected for pedestrians and cyclists.

More than $7.6 million in WA Bicycle Network grant funding has been granted to 63 projects across 45 local governments. The state government matches funding with local governments who have successfully applied for funding.

The program, administered by the Department of Transport, assists local governments with the planning, design and construction of bicycle infrastructure to better connect communities.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the grant funding aligned with the Town’s goal of creating a more connected and active community.

“Shared footpaths enable both pedestrians and cyclists to safely travel between destinations, providing a safe alternative to cycling on the road.

“The WA Bicycle Network grant funding scheme is part of the WA Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031, which sets out the plan for a safe and sustainable cycling network across the state in both metropolitan and regional areas.

“This grant funding compliments objectives set out in the Town’s Strategic Community Plan, including that the town’s infrastructure needs are identified, planned and developed.

“Wilson Street is a key road asset in Hedland, serving as a connectivity route between Port and South Hedland.

“I look forward to viewing the completed detailed designs for the Wilson Street shared use path.”
