Work has commenced on the first stage of the Port Hedland Spoilbank Marina development - a project set to transform Port Hedland's waterfront into an attractive and popular destination for locals and visitors.

The Town is working closely with the Pilbara Ports Authority, the Department of Transport, DevelopmentWA and the Pilbara Development Commission to develop the long-awaited Marina, which will alleviate demand on existing boat launching facilities, as well as improve access and safety for recreational boaters. It will also create a vibrant new amenity of small business trading, and family get-togethers, for the entire Port Hedland community to enjoy.

Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC, Minister for Regional Development, attended the site this morning for the official sod-turning ceremony.

"Today marks a major milestone in the delivery of the long-awaited marina at Port Hedland," said Minister MacTiernan.

"It is a good moment for the Port Hedland community as they witness their great vision for the future of the town become a reality.

"The roads selected for upgrades will create the least amount of inconvenience to residents during construction and will provide direct long-term access to the Marina once complete.

"We are getting on with delivering for the Hedland community, with the next major tranche of works on the Spoilbank Marina expected to start in early 2021."

Mayor Peter Carter welcomes the move to the next stage of delivery for the Spoilbank Marina project.

"I would like to thank Minister MacTiernan for coming to Hedland; her passion and determination has driven this project from conception to construction.

"This has been a long time coming for the Hedland community, which has been eager to see a Marina for decades.

"I'd like to also thank the Spoilbank Community Reference Group for coming together in the projects early days to inform how the Marina could best serve its everyday users."

Features of the Spoilbank Marina development include:

  • a four-lane boat ramp;
  • 21 boat-pen marina with capacity to expand to 80 pens in the future;
  • separate entrance channel to the main shipping channel;
  • trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles;
  • maintenance hardstand;
  • publicly accessible breakwaters with pedestrian path;
  • public recreation and event space and public amenities;
