Marie Marland Temporary Off-leash Dog Park Now Open

Last night, the Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP officially opened the new Marie Marland temporary off-leash dog park, delivering on the Town’s commitment to establish an off-leash dog exercise area in South Hedland.

In February, Council endorsed the temporary measure which will be in place until a permanent off-leash facility is established as part of the South Hedland Integrated Sports Complex Masterplan.

A community survey which ran earlier this year found a 96% approval rating for the measure; this facility is the third of its kind in Hedland, with Spoilbank and the McGregor Street Canine Club also available as off-leash areas.

Doggy bags, a bin and water tap are on site.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the establishment of the temporary off-leash dog park was a long time coming.

“Since coming to Hedland, residents and community groups have expressed to me a desire to establish an off-leash dog park in South Hedland: this has now been delivered.

“I’m so pleased our canine friends have somewhere to run free in South Hedland, saving dog owners the trip to Port Hedland.

“There are a few rules I’d like to emphasise before people start using the park: aggressive dogs are not permitted, dogs must be leashed before leaving and all smelly deposits need to be collected and disposed of accordingly.

“Our Rangers Team will be patrolling the area, so please abide by the site signage to avoid fines for non-compliance.”
